Samsonite Folding Chairs
|
Samsonite came to Catalyst with the desire to redesign the age-old steel folding chair that had graced churches, schools, and other public meeting places for decades. The project goal was to express a more modern vibe to the product while still remaining in the same price range as the old model. The final design of the chairs incorporated graceful, curving legs unlike the straight legs of the old product. By incorporating a two-piece stamped steel design for the back, the backrest could rotate which not only added comfort to the seat, but allowed for it to fold flatter for shipping and storage. While the production costs of the new chair came in higher than that of its predecessor, the rotating back allowed for better nesting which in allowed 25% more units to be shipped in a container from the overseas supplier. The savings in shipping costs more than offset the increased production cost, allowing the product to meet the target price point. |
